Snap a Photo, Skip the Typing
Scan receipts, paychecks, credit card statements, and loan documents. AI extracts the data. You just review and save.
Snap a photo of any financial document — receipt, paycheck, credit card statement, or loan document — and Cash Balancer's AI extracts every number automatically.
Three steps to zero data entry
Take a Photo
Point your camera at a receipt, paycheck, credit card statement, or loan document. The app opens your camera directly — no need to save to your photo library first.
AI Reads the Document
The image is sent to an AI model that understands financial documents. It extracts amounts, dates, merchant names, APRs, balances, and categories — not just raw text, but the meaning behind it.
Review and Save
The extracted data pre-fills the form. Review the fields, make any corrections, and save. The expense, paycheck, or debt is added to your account with one tap.
Four document types, one scanner
Each document type has a specialized AI prompt that knows exactly which fields to look for.
Receipts
Snap a photo of any store receipt, restaurant bill, or delivery confirmation. The AI extracts the total amount, merchant name, date, and automatically assigns a budget category.
Paychecks
Photograph your pay stub. The AI reads gross pay, net pay, employer name, pay date, and pay frequency. This feeds directly into your monthly income calculations and cash flow projections.
Credit Card Statements
Scan up to 10 pages. The AI extracts total balance, purchase balance, cash advance balance, purchase APR, cash advance APR, minimum payment, due date, credit limit, and available credit. Server-side validation catches APR swaps and implausible balances.
Loan Documents
Photograph loan agreements, mortgage statements, student loan notices, or medical bills. The AI extracts balance, interest rate, minimum payment, due date, loan term, and original amount. Fields are mapped to the correct debt type automatically.
Why AI extraction is different from OCR
Traditional OCR (optical character recognition) reads text character by character. It can tell you that a document contains the string "$198.45" but it has no idea whether that number is a total, a subtotal, a tax amount, or a balance.
Cash Balancer uses a multimodal AI that actually understands financial documents. It knows that the large bold number at the bottom of a receipt is the total. It knows that the number labeled "APR" on a credit card statement is an interest rate, not a balance. It can distinguish between a purchase APR and a cash advance APR even when the formatting varies between issuers.
This understanding means fewer errors, fewer manual corrections, and faster data entry. The AI also validates its own output — for example, catching when a credit card's purchase and cash advance APRs are swapped, or when a balance exceeds the credit limit.
Reads: "$198.45 $12.34 $210.79 04/01 VISA PLATINUM"
Which number is which? OCR cannot tell.
Automatic expense categorization
The AI reads the merchant name and items to assign your receipt to the right budget category.
Your documents stay private
Financial documents contain some of your most sensitive information. Cash Balancer treats them accordingly. Images are compressed to 1024px max resolution before processing to minimize data transfer. They are processed in memory on the server and discarded immediately. No document image is ever stored in the cloud.
If the cloud service is unavailable, the app falls back to on-device OCR using Apple's Vision framework. This means you can still scan documents even without an internet connection — though the on-device extraction is less accurate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What types of documents can the scanner read?
Cash Balancer can scan four types of financial documents: receipts (store purchases, restaurant bills, online order confirmations), paychecks (pay stubs showing gross pay, net pay, employer, and pay date), credit card statements (including multi-page statements with purchase balance, cash advance balance, dual APRs, credit limit, minimum payment, and due date), and debt/loan documents (loan agreements, mortgage statements, medical bills). Each document type has a specialized AI prompt that knows exactly which fields to extract.
How accurate is the AI document extraction?
The scanner uses Claude, an advanced AI model from Anthropic, for document understanding. Unlike traditional OCR that reads text character by character, Claude actually understands the document — it knows that the number next to 'Total' on a receipt is the amount you paid, not your change. For credit card statements, it can distinguish between purchase APR and cash advance APR even when the formatting is unusual. Accuracy is significantly higher than on-device OCR alone. In our testing, the AI correctly extracts the primary fields (amount, date, merchant) on over 95% of clear, well-lit photos. The app also includes server-side validation that catches common errors like swapped APR values or implausible balances.
Does it work with multi-page credit card statements?
Yes. You can scan up to 10 pages of a credit card statement in a single session. The AI processes all pages together to build a complete picture — it pulls the total balance, minimum payment, due date, and APRs from the summary page, and can cross-reference transaction details from subsequent pages. The Cloud Function uses a higher token limit (5,000 tokens) specifically to handle multi-page document extraction without cutting off data.
What happens if the scan fails or the photo is blurry?
If the Cloud Function is unavailable or returns an error, Cash Balancer automatically falls back to on-device OCR using Apple's Vision framework. This fallback is less accurate but works offline. For best results, take photos in good lighting with the document flat and fully in frame. If the AI cannot confidently extract a field, it leaves it blank rather than guessing, so you can fill it in manually. You always get a chance to review and edit the extracted data before saving.
Does the receipt scanner auto-categorize my expenses?
Yes. When you scan a receipt, the AI analyzes the merchant name and purchased items to assign a budget category (like Food, Transportation, Entertainment, or Clothing) and a more specific category detail. For example, a Starbucks receipt would be categorized as 'Food' with the detail 'Coffee/Cafe'. If the AI assigns 'Other', you can type in a custom category name. The category is used to track your spending against your monthly budgets, so you can see how much you are spending in each area without manual tagging.
Is my document data stored or shared anywhere?
Document images are stored locally on your device only — they are never uploaded to a cloud server for storage. When you scan a document, the image is temporarily sent to a Firebase Cloud Function that proxies it to the AI for extraction. The image is processed in memory and discarded immediately after the AI returns the extracted data. The AI provider (Anthropic) does not store or train on your documents. Only the extracted text fields (amount, date, merchant, etc.) are saved to your account — never the image itself.
